My dear companion and I went back to Matera recently. It took five hours to get there again, but not because our train split and went two separate directions like last time, but rather because we rented a car and drove down from Rome. And while car rental in Italy can be expensive, gas and highway tolls are steep, in some instances, it is totally worth it. Because driving through Basilicata is gorgeous:
