Let’s really appreciate that Rondanini Pietà for another moment…

HELL YES.
HELL YES.

Shall we commune some more with Michelangelo’s last sculpture? The one that makes the Castello Sforzesco and Milan worthy destinations? The one that shows his process and him changing his mind and his religious fervor and if you really want to get crazy maybe even his fear and knowledge of his impending death? Let’s do it. (and le’ts do it with my photos this time instead of lame wikimedia commons ones):

Nobody else to impede the view.
Nobody else to impede the view.
From the side (with nobody else)
From the side (with nobody else)
The other side. Still no other people
The other side. Still no other people
Ch-ch-ch-changes
Ch-ch-ch-changes
PATHOS
PATHOS
And oh, what's that? another face?! So not only is there an extra arm, but there's a third face. HELL YES AGAIN.

Of the three Michelangelo Pietàs this one isn’t my favorite, but I would argue it is by a HUGE, HUGE margin the most interesting. And it is a BILLION times more fascinating than the David, with the benefit of not having to wait in a massive line to see it, or have a ton of other people in the way when you want to look at it. Oh Michelangelo, why do you have to be so good?

PS- I might be procrastinating a wee little bit here about moving on to Florence and its many fine (or shitty, whichever– I’m looking at you Accademia) museums. Oh Florence, I hate and love you so much… stay tuned…

    1. Florence is beautiful! and also maddening and ugly and frustrating and charming in the best Italian ways! I’ll get to my favorite Pietà shortly! The extra arm and face demonstrate changes he initially planned for the Christ figure to be a LOT bigger and for the Virgin to be facing a totally different direction, but for various reasons (some known, some only guessed out) he changed his plans. It’s really powerful either way.
